Who has the muscle to stop genocide?

How can it be that those of us who do not want war are not getting what we want? We who do not want war are the majority.

When South Africa brought its case to the International Court of Justice, there was some doubt that the court would rule in its favor, but the court did hand down a near unanimous ruling that there was a “plausible” case that Israel was violating the Genocide Convention. So now what?

Who has the muscle to stop the genocide? The United States. Given the military and economic might of the US, how can anyone deny that the US could stop the genocide? How do the people in Washington, who are misrepresenting our wishes so badly, get into those positions of power in the first place? The basic answer is that they get there using the money of the billionaires and their corporations, and using the people’s votes.

We have power. For me, a bottom line for life in these United States is to use all the power we have toward the world we want, while staying as happy and healthy as possible.

To really use the power we have, we need to stop believing the anti-people-power propaganda that we’ve been fed for decades. There are words and phrases designed to keep many folks in fear rather than in our power. “Anybody but him” and “alternatives can’t win” and “voting doesn’t matter” and “rallies and protests don’t either” and many more. In light of this being a year of presidential elections, let’s examine these disempowering words and phrases in future months. We do have more power and choices than they want us to believe.
